Martinsville Speedway is NASCAR's oldest and smallest track. Martinsville hosted its first NASCAR-sanctioned race in 1948. The following season, Bill France Sr. introduced Strictly Stock, which evolved into the NASCAR Winston Cup series. Martinsville was the sixth race of that series on September 25, 1949. The track was paved in 1956, and in 1976, the bottom groove of asphalt in the corners was replaced with concrete. More than 42,000 seats were added in the 1990s, and now the track nearly is surrounded by seating areas. A new garage area and a tunnel into the infield were added in 2001.
