Homestead-Miami Speedway

To a great extent, Homestead-Miami Speedway symbolizes the area's resiliency as much as its growth. Hurricane Andrew, one of the nation's most devastating storms, ravaged Homestead in the summer of 1992. The speedway was proposed to revitalize the area, and ground was broken a year after the hurricane struck. The track was flat with square corners in the beginning, but $8.2 million was spent in 1997 to make it into a more symmetrical oval. That didn't make the racing much better, so more than $10 million was spent to add variable banking, from 18 to 20 degrees, in the turns before the 2003 NASCAR races.
