Jimmie Johnson has his sights set on Michigan International Speedway this weekend as he vies for a victory at the two-mile oval, one of only seven tracks at which he hasn't won. In his 12 starts there, Johnson has collected two top-five and five top-10 finishes.

JIMMIE JOHNSON QUOTES

ON MICHIGAN INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY: "Michigan always puts on great show. It's a track that we've typically had a lot of side-by-side racing and a lot of action, so it will be interesting to see how these new cars run out there. There's a lot of room to race, and if your car isn't handling like it needs to be you can try some other grooves and see what happens. If your car is handling like you want it to, you can get on the outside and pass people. I'm excited to get there and see if we can get a win."

ON NEVER HAVING WON AT MICHIGAN: "We've had some pretty good runs at Michigan and we've been competitive, but we haven't been able to find our way to victory lane. Hopefully we can change that this weekend. This has been a track that's challenged us in the past a little bit. We've had success at Fontana and some of the other mile-and-a-half tracks, but we haven't had that same success at Michigan. Being in the new car, though, we may be able to find something we never have before. That's one thing about these cars -- all the notes we've had in the past kind of go out the window and you start fresh, in a sense. So we'll be putting a lot of effort in it. When you go somewhere you've never won, there's definitely a little bit more of a challenge. Hopefully we can win one there."

WITH FATHER'S DAY COMING UP, WHAT HAS YOUR DAD MEANT TO YOU AND YOUR RACING CAREER OVER THE YEARS? "My parents in general have done everything to make sure that I could race and that my brothers could race. And there were a lot of years of traveling to different states to race motorcycles on top of racing at our local track. My dad is one of the biggest fans of motorsports out there, and his love and appreciation for the sport really led to my interest in it. He took me to my own races, and I also watched a Riverside race in '85 or '86 and stood there watching from the fence. I walked all around the track and enjoyed it. I went to dirt-track races with him and IndyCar races -- I've been to them all. His fondness for the sport really gave me my start and my desire to be involved in it."

RACE NOTES

Chassis

Chassis No. 502 will be driven in Sunday's Sprint Cup event at Michigan International Speedway. Johnson piloted the chassis in this year's Coca-Cola 600 but had a disappointing finish after an engine failure late in the race. The backup chassis, No. 480, has been used twice, including a fourth-place showing in this season's Sprint All-Star Challenge.

Michigan

Johnson has made 12 Cup starts at Michigan International Speedway, one of only seven tracks at which the back-to-back champion hasn't won. He has two top-five and five top-10 finishes and has started from the pole once. Johnson has completed 94.8% of competition laps (2,210 of 2,332) at the two-mile oval and has an average start and finish of 10.8 and 14.8.

Career

Johnson has won at least three Cup races a season since he posted his first victory in 2002. He is the only driver in the modern era to win at least three races in each of his first six full-time seasons.

Johnson's most recent victory at Phoenix (April 12, 2008) was the 34th of his Sprint Cup career. The win moves Johnson past legendary "Fireball" Roberts for 18th on NASCAR's all-time wins list. Johnson has the fourth-highest win total among active drivers, behind Jeff Gordon (81), Bill Elliott (44) and Mark Martin (35).

Johnson has won Sprint Cup Series races at all but seven (Bristol, Michigan, Infineon, Chicago, Watkins Glen, Kansas, Homestead) of the 22 tracks where the series competes.

Johnson's 10 wins in 2007 is the highest number recorded in a single season since Jeff Gordon posted 13 in 1998.

The four consecutive wins scored by the No. 48 team in the 2007 Chase for the Championship ties a modern-era NASCAR record.

History

In 233 Sprint Cup Series starts, Johnson has posted 90 top five and 140 top-10 finishes. He has a top-five finish at every track on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series circuit. Johnson has led 5,992 laps and driven 67,469 laps in his Sprint Cup career, covering more than 89,957 miles. He has finished on the lead lap 176 times.
