Jimmie Johnson and Team Lowe's Racing will look for their second win of the season when they visit Dover International Speedway for Sunday's Sprint Cup event.
In 12 starts at The Monster Mile, Johnson has three wins and seven top-10 finishes. He has started from the pole twice, including the fall event last season.
JIMMIE JOHNSON QUOTES
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON RACING AT DOVER THIS WEEKEND? "I'm excited. We've really been learning a lot and we've gone through the last couple weeks and made some great improvements to the front of our race car. The front was working so well and turning so strongly we couldn't keep the back of our car in the track and the car had been pretty loose. When we started the (Coca-Cola) 600, we made some great adjustments and really feel like we tickled the right areas to get the car balanced grip overall. It may not have been the fastest thing throughout the course of the night, but much more competitive than we've been. I think we finally have a baseline with this car for the big tracks, and from there we can fine-tune. ... Dover's a different track. You do have the high speeds, but it's more of a short track. And a unique-shaped track -- the way you fly into the corner and then turn around and jump back out is much different. So hopefully everything carries over. But it's a track I really enjoying running at -- it's one of my favorites. And the fact that this tire and this car is allowing us to move around, I think we'll have good racing from top to bottom at Dover, which is kind of unusual. But I think this car will provide that there."
THIS IS THE FIRST TIME YOU GUYS ARE TESTING AT POCONO. HOW'S THIS GOING TO AFFECT YOU GUYS IN OTHER RACES THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER? "It's really kind of odd that we're testing here and I think a large part of it is because of a vote that NASCAR let the crew chiefs be a part of -- what tracks they wanted to test at. Since no one has been up here in so long to test, we don't have current data files for this track. And it's such a unique race track, I think it was top of the line for all the crew chiefs to come up, get some time on the track and get some new data files. ... When we leave here there are some things that cross over to Indy. But outside of that, it's such a unique track, the corners and banking and how rough it is, there's really nowhere else like this that we run. So it's more of a decision made by a majority of the crew chiefs in the garage to get data on this track."
RACE NOTES
Chassis
Team Lowe's Racing will use chassis No. 465 as its primary in Sunday's Dover International Speedway event. In its three starts, Johnson has driven the chassis to two runner-up finishes. Chassis No. 480 will be used as a backup.
Dover
Johnson has started 12 Cup races at Dover International Speedway, collecting three wins, four top-five finishes and seven top-10s. The Sprint Cup champion has completed 96.2% of competition laps (4,621 of 4,804) at the one-mile oval and has an average start and finish of 12.9 and 11.9.
Career
Johnson has won at least three Cup races a season since he posted his first victory in 2002. He is the only driver in the modern era to win at least three races in each of his first six full-time seasons.
Johnson's most recent victory at Phoenix (April 12, 2008) was the 34th of his Sprint Cup career. The win moved Johnson past legendary "Fireball" Roberts for 18th on NASCAR's all-time wins list. Johnson has the fourth-highest win total among active drivers, behind Jeff Gordon (81), Bill Elliott (44) and Mark Martin (35).
Johnson has won Sprint Cup Series races at all but seven (Bristol, Michigan, Infineon, Chicago, Watkins Glen, Kansas, Homestead) of the 22 tracks where the series competes.
Johnson's 10 wins in 2007 is the highest number recorded in a single season since Jeff Gordon posted 13 in 1998.
The four-consecutive wins scored by the No. 48 team in the 2007 Chase for the Championship ties a modern-era NASCAR record.
History
In 231 Sprint Cup Series starts, Johnson has posted 90 top-five finishes and 138 top-10s. He has a top-five finish at every track on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series circuit. Johnson has led 5,931 laps and driven 66,870 laps in his Sprint Cup career, covering more than 89,058 miles. He has finished on the lead lap 175 times.
