Relaxing at the Track

(2 ratings)

When August rolls around, relaxing is not something the No. 48 does frequently. We take our jobs at the track very seriously.  We have our game plan every race, and we're focused on executing that plan.

But everyone needs some time to relax mentally and physically, particularly when you work under the kind of pressure we do.

So what does Team 48 do during race weekends to blow off some steam?  Once the garage closes and all of our meetings and preparations for race day are done, a lot of the guys on the team like to go check out the local area.

The favorite activities for the guys on the team include golf, go karts, dinner, baseball games and fishing.  It just depends on the city.

Indy is a great place for go-karts - there are some great tracks there.  The guys really get competitive when they race against each other.  New Hampshire is the place where they try to go catch a Red Sox game but a lot of cities we visit have small, local teams that are fun to support, too.

There are good golf courses in a lot of towns we go to - it's just getting the time to play.  At Talladega, the Robert Trent Jones Trail in Anniston is a tough, beautiful course.

And they always like to eat.  The Lowe’s Team can find good restaurants wherever we go.  I try to encourage them to eat healthy and smart, but you can't pass up the seafood in Dover or the BBQ in Kansas City.

But even when they're having fun, they still talk about racing - what happened last week, what's going to happen tomorrow, getting ready for next week.

As a team, we never really get that far away from our game plan and our focus on winning the race.  But the relaxing time helps us stay sharp and builds the teamwork we need to execute our plan.
