One of three superspeedways constructed in 1960, the track provided the foundation for Bruton Smith's Speedway Motorsports Inc. During its existence, the speedway has accumulated a list of firsts. In 1984, it became the only sports facility in America to offer year-round living accommodations. Eight years later it became the first modern superspeedway to host night auto racing. It also offered the first luxurious Speedway Club. In 2009, the speedway celebrates the 50th running of the Coca-Cola 600.
