Johnson Goes for 1st Win at Michigan

(1 rating)

BROOKLYN, Mich. -- Jimmie Johnson has never won at Michigan International Speedway, one of only six Sprint Cup tracks which has evaded the three-time Cup Series champion.

While he has tallied six top-10 finishes in 14 starts at the two-mile oval, Johnson’s third-place result in August 2007 is his best.

“We all enjoy racing at Michigan,” said Johnson. “There are a lot of options and it’s a track that Chad and I have worked really hard to be good at. We’ve had some good races but just haven’t finished where we felt like we could. It’s one of the races we kind of highlight on the schedule to get a trophy at.”

Johnson also has a special place in his heart for the Brooklyn, Mich. track as it’s just around the corner from Chevrolet, which has been by Johnson’s side since his early years in racing.

“I’m excited to go to Michigan – being in the backyard of our automakers,” said Johnson. “It’s a tough time for them right now and they’re such an important part of our sport and hopefully we can get a (Chevrolet) bowtie to victory lane. We’ve never done that up there and there wouldn’t be a better time for us to do that for them.”

Johnson will be competing for the win live on TNT beginning with a pre-race show at 1:30 p.m. ET on Sunday.
