Jimmie Johnson and the No. 48 Kobalt Chevrolet team started fifth for the Kobalt 400. On the first two pit stops while holding down the top five, Johnson took on right side tires only. On lap 49 he took the lead for the first time of the race. Johnson then started to get loose as the pit cycle wore on and slipped to third. On lap 97 the team pitted for four tires and fuel and Johnson resumed the race in the second position. As the next pit cycle approached Johnson said he needed more grip all around in the No. 48 car and was tight in the center. Crew chief Chad Knaus and the team made adjustments to the car. Johnson led once again and said the Chevy SS was loose but comfortable. He pitted for fuel only with 48 laps to go and got boxed in by the car ahead of him. Johnson lost valuable position in the pit and was in tenth for the restart with 44 laps to go. Johnson led twice during the 400-mile event for 33 laps. In the closing laps of the Kobalt 400, Johnson slowly picked off the competition and crossed the finish line in sixth place.
QUOTING JIMMIE: “ We were just really loose most of the day and got blocked in on that last pit stop and lost the handle of the track a bit. We worked hard all weekend long on that car, so I’m proud of the effort by this team.”
HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS FINISHERS: Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (2nd), Jeff Gordon (9th), Kasey Kahne (8th).
