The summer stretch is here! One of the most important lessons for enjoying the racetrack experience during the hot days of summer is keeping your cool. It’s all about shade, hydration, cooling stations and sunscreen. With some creativity, you can create the “coolest” campsite at the track, armed with a few simple tips and some great products from Lowe’s:
|
Build your own pool:
If you own a pickup truck, you can build your very own racetrack pool. You’ll be the envy of those around you, and make a lot of new friends in the process. Just take a large Duraworx blue tarp and place in the truck bed. Secure the corners with sandbags, and use bungee cords through the grommets to secure the edges of the tarp to the truck. Fill with water from the campsite hookup, and you’re ready to swim.

If you don’t have a pickup, just pick up an inflatable pool and a portable air compressor from Kobalt. You’ll be able to inflate it in no time and get to work on your tan.
Jennifer Swanson of West Palm Beach, FL, cools off headfirst while her friends enjoy the pool in their elaborate campground setup.
Add a cooling station
: You can create an area to cool down with an oscillating misting fan that provides a gentle breeze and refreshing mist. Or, relive your childhood with a sprinkler. You’ll stay cool and have fun at the same time.
Create a shady spot:
Get away from the sun with a cool, shady spot – perfect for relaxing before the race. A pop-up canopy is easy to install and anchor, and you’ll have shade in less time than a lap at Daytona. You can really show your Team 48 spirit with a Jimmie Johnson canopy.
Mary Madsen of Rochester, NY, stays cool with style with a pop-up tent, Team 48 and 24 chairs and a portable pool. The Madsen family aren't just Lowe's fans -- they had to stop at Lowe's in South Carolina to buy supplies to make emergency repairs to their motorhome.
Decorate with style:
If you’re the artistic type…and you want your trackside oasis to be the best on-site…add some décor. You know, inflatable palm trees, beach balls, Jimmie Johnson flags and Team 48 banner show your pride and your sense of style! Check out the Team Store for lots of great options.
Protect yourself from the summer sun:
Before you dip your toe in the water, be sure to put on sunscreen and re-apply often. You don’t want sunburn to limit your summer fun. Drink lots of water to stay hydrated. The rule of thumb is one bottle of water for every other beverage consumed on hot, humid days.
Trust me, you may arrive at Daytona, Chicago or Indy with a small group…but with an infield pool, you’ll be making friends in no time!!!
Now dive in….and don’t forget to re-apply that sunscreen!!!
Jeff Nickels (L), of Atlantic Beach, FL, enjoys his custom-made, air-conditioned camper and shaded pool with friends Josh Watkins (M) and Dave Hernandez (R) of Jacksonville, FL.
